This year’s coffee harvest has just begun and the trees are bursting with bright red cherries; an exciting sight for us here at Cooperativa COMISUYL in Honduras. However, these ripe cherries are a mixed blessing because they come with a threat: “Coyotes”. As an independent farmer co-op with little money and protection, we live in constant fear of the coyotes.
Who are the coyotes?
The coyotes are intermediary street-buyers and money-lenders who work for their own interest. They travel in packs searching for small growers who are struggling financially and trick them into selling their coffee in ways that do not benefit the growers. They offer higher prices when it is advantageous for them, giving the farmer the illusion that they’ll be making more money; but in reality, the farmers end up losing out on the deal.
How coyotes are deceiving the farmers
Unlike the co-op, the coyotes do not work for the interest of the farmers, and they often lend out money with incredibly high interest rates upwards of 25 per cent. Farmers who need the $500 advance capital to harvest their crops have a hard time refusing the loan, despite the fact that the interest rate is completely unfair.
This is bad for the farmer and for the co-op. At Cooperativa COMISUYL, we are worried because the coyotes are using other tricks to mislead the farmers and destroy the co-op. They see our co-op as a threat because we are working to help the farmers, so they offer them a slightly higher price for the sole purpose of competing with the co-op. Once the co-op is weakened or eliminated, they can offer any price to the farmers because they have no other option.
Our co-op relies on the co-operation of the farmers; otherwise, it will not be able to continue helping them to process and export their own coffee, send their children to school, improve their housing and medical centers and provide better job opportunities.
The solution
The solution to the threat of the coyotes is education. We are now offering a program that teaches the farmers about the reality of trading with the coyotes. In addition to education, Cooperativa COMISUYL is working to pay the growers a fair price while improving community services and infrastructure.
We hope that the sale of Cafe Solar will help us to continue this project so that we can we can improve our lives among the mountains that make our home.

Este año la cosecha de café acaba de comenzar y los arboles están llenos de cerezas rojas y brillantes, un emocionante espectáculo para nosotros aquí en Cooperativa COMISUYL en Honduras, sin embargo estas cerezas maduras son un arma de doble filo por que vienen con una amenaza: “Coyotes” como productor independiente la co-operativa con poco dinero y protección, vivimos en constante temor a los coyotes.
Quienes son los coyotes?
Los coyotes son compradores intermediarios prestamistas quienes trabajan por sus propios intereses. Ellos viajan en paquetes buscando pequeños productores quienes estan con problemas financieros y los engañan para que les vendan su café de manera que no beneficia a los productores. Ellos ofrecen precios altos cuando es ventajoso para ellos, les dan a los agricultores la hilusion que ellos van a hacer mas dinero, pero en realidad, los agricultores terminan perdiendo en el trato.
¿Como los coyotes están engañando a los agricultores?
Diferente a la co-operativa, los coyotes no trabajan por los intereses de los agricultores, y ellos a menudo les prestan el dinero con muy altas tasas de interés al alza del 25 por ciento. Los agricultores que necesitan la capital adelanto para cosechar sus cultivos tienen dificultades para rechazar el préstamo, a pesar de que la tasa de interés es completamente injusto.
